Dave knows my favorite college football team is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. My brother attended ND for undergrad and ever since I’ve been in love with the school. I remember cool autumn days, the streets lined with yellow leaves when we watched the games as a family. 2012 was a big year for the Irish– they were well on their way to the National Championship game by the fall. Dave is a Penn State fan, but secured tickets to the Notre Dame vs. Pitt game at South Bend for us and my brother and sister in law– we were ecstatic. With the trunk full of blankets and tailgating gear, Dave drove us all to South Bend the first weekend of November for the game.
It was brisk the day of the game, and I was layered up in sweatshirts and a Notre Dame beanie– I looked slightly homeless but mostly like a big fan. We tailgated as a group and Dave suggested everyone have a shot of scotch. A little unlike him, but I figured he was just having fun. Then we all decided to walk around the campus. We went to my brother’s old dorm, we went to the cathedral, and we posed outside the Golden Dome. The game was about to start when we got to the Grotto-the most serene spot on campus where you can light candles and pray. I asked Dave for a dollar to put in the donation jar and everyone quickly knelt. I said “Come on, we’re missing kick off!” and took off walking. Dave was lagging behind and said, “Sarah, wait!” To which I replied, “What Dave, we’re late!” and then he pulled a box out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. I can definitively say it’s the only time I’ve ever been surprised in my life. Everyone was cheering and I just kept screaming “OH MY GOD!” The ring was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen and I’m pretty sure I grabbed it and put it on myself before even saying yes. But better than the ring was the thought Dave put into the proposal, in front of my brother and sister in law, at a place that is so special to me. It proves even more why we should be getting married, because Dave knew just how to make me feel special. Notre Dame won the game, but I was the real winner that day. When I attended the Notre Dame games as a child, I could have never imagined I would be getting engaged there. It was truly perfect.
