I still remember the first time I saw him coming through the doors that day. He walked towards me, and my heart skipped a beat. I’m sure you have heard of time slowing down the first time you see the love of your life? Well that actually happened for me. We were around each other before, but only briefly because we had mutual friends, yet we never got the chance to talk to each other. This time was different. We caught eyes, talked all night, and eventually exchanged numbers. He called me the next day, and we were together any chance we had after that for the next two years. We lived an hour and a half apart, he was working in Morgantown, and I in Pittsburgh. We eventually decided that I would leave my job to come live with him, and work in Morgantown.
Six months later, on a hot Friday afternoon, Joel called me and told me to get packed — that we were going away for the weekend. He didn’t tell me where we were going, but told me to pack for a lot of walking. I had no clue what to pack, so obviously it was a big bag! We left that evening, and I begged him to tell me where we were going. Eventually I figured it out, we were headed to NYC!! When we arrived, he had a room reserved at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. I had never been to New York before, and was dazzled by the lights and, well, everything.
The next day we did all the touristy stuff. We went to the top of the Chrysler building, saw the Statue of Liberty, walked through Central Park, and toured the Museum of Natural History. We eventually walked around until we decided to stop for dinner at a tiny little place — Bistro Cassis — that we thought looked good. We sat on the terrace, and discussed how happy we were, and how much fun we were having together. That is when he pulled the ring out of his pocket, got down on one knee, and told me how he wanted for us to spend our lives together. He was so nervous, and stumbled over his words… but the loving, and thoughtful things he said to me that night I will cherish forever. Of course I said yes, and was in tears while doing so! It was by far one of the most romantic, and memorable times of my life. I married my best friend a little over a year after that trip, and am the happiest woman alive. He is my best friend, and always will be. I am so incredibly lucky to have him as my partner in life, and feel so blessed in every single way to call such an amazing man my husband.
