Cognitive modellers are often accused of being unprincipled in their use of models (Cooper & Shallice, 1995), and in brain imaging there are still many issues about the methods used to rule out noise and exclude activation in brain regions that are merely by-products of the focus of a study. The fact that most amnesics have great difficulty in forming new semantic memories poses real problems for this theoretical approach. It accepts the use of the scientific method, and rejects introspection as valid methods of investigations, unlike phenomenological methods such as Freudian psychology.

One implication that follows from the perspective that both continuity and change coexist and underlie the development of cognitive vulnerabilities is that there is no definitive endpoint at any particular age when cognitive vulnerabilities would be expected to finally emerge and stabilize into unchanging, trait vulnerabilities that are “set in plaster.” Indeed, asking the question of which factors and processes predict the developmental origins of cognitive vulnerabilities, which has been the aim of this article, seems to imply that there is an endpoint to the formation of cognitive vulnerabilities and that a specific set of mechanisms will be found that contribute to the final manifestation of cognitive vulnerabilities at some point in development.
