In the autumn of 1888 London is stirred by the murder of five prostitutes in the neighbourhood of Whitechapel. You need to have a literary agent to submit anything to them. For Bourdieu and Passeron (who coined the term), the concept of cultural capital is useful for understanding why state education systems so often fail to distribute literacy evenly among classes: although public schooling in capitalist democracies supposed to be meritocratic, the students who most often succeed are not necessarily the most talented but those whose families enjoy a higher social, economic and cultural status (i.e. tend to possess the greatest cultural capital).

The combinations of short lines of text and images throughout may deliver the same information to a student as a lengthy paragraph, but feel more palatable. Examples of (non-client) books in this vein that I enjoyed are Rebecca Skloot’s THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, and especially Mary Roach’s STIFF. Some people take this as a sign that graphic novels do not present a challenge to readers. This is a hefty tome for a graphic novel, nearly 600 pages in length, but Thompson’s economy of words and the conscious care he took to avoid being overly cynical about his subject matter make this a less burdensome read than you might expect.

I was looking for a low-key, minimal way of telling a character-based narrative. Graphic Novels: A Genre Guide to Comic Books, Manga, and More by Michael Pawuk. LaCroce is a California psychologist; the colorful art suggests a child’s crayon drawings, and the story is fine for children through tweens. Lat, a noted Malaysian cartoonist, tells the story of the early life of a Muslim boy growing up on a rural rubber plantation during the 1950s. Of the four queries that have had no response, three agencies list on both their website and in my silly little "book about agents" that they respond to queries in a certain amount of time regardless of rejection or acceptance, yet some of these are months beyond those rough dates without a word.

The Search, also by Eric Heuvel is a companion volume to A Family Secret and tells the story of Esther, and what happened to her before and during the war. If you're playing a character that someone else created, whom does the "I" represent? Asking students to discuss their responses to the text helps them to participate in communal discussion.
