Constructivism focuses on preparing the learner to problem solve in ambiguous situations. Forman and McPhail (1993) emphasize the role of mutuality and the use of specialized forms of discourse "to engage in logical arguments, to share ideas, and to work together in the pursuit of common goals" (p. 226). (This finding corresponds to our own, where we have found the importance of trust in the development of working methods in sustained collaboration.) A different pattern of collaboration was revealed in Moll & Whitmore's (1993) study of a bilingual classroom in the Southwestern United States in which reading and writing in two languages were integrated in project-oriented literacy activities.
